Today, when people ask me what prepared me for the kind of life I’ve led, they usually expect me to reply with the name of a course in finance, economics, or political science.

We read Plato and many other great philosophers. But gradually it dawned on me that, more than teaching students the contents of any book or treatise, Professor Demos was teaching us how to think about thinking.
I came to believe that his underlying objective—the theme that tied the entire course together— was to demonstrate that nothing can be proven in an absolute sense. Approaching one proposition after another from the perspectives of great thinkers of the ages, he showed us that it is impossible to prove any of them with certainty.
